Description
The custody conciliator will conduct conciliation conferences related to filings in new custody
cases and custody modification cases, including emergency/expedited conferences when
referred by a judge.
The conciliator will prepare consent agreements and proposed court
orders and make recommendations to the court for the resolution of issues raised in custody
actions.
Typical Duties
• Schedule and conduct conciliation sessions with the parties and their attorneys to
define the issues, assess relief sought, and attempt to resolve outstanding disputes.
• Interview the parties to assess the nature of the complaint or petition and relief sought.
• Work with the parties to develop custody agreements.
• Prepare consent orders stating conditions of agreement and submit consent orders to
judge for approval.
• Prepare written recommendations to judge on custody issues when agreement is not
reached.
• Provide report to judge regarding parties’ compliance with conciliation process and
results of conciliation.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
• Juris Doctor degree and admission to practice law in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a practicing attorney, preferably in family
law
• Knowledge of family law related issues.
• Knowledge of family law statutes, rules, regulations, and case law
• Knowledge of mediation or arbitration
Abilities
• Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, problem solving, negotiation and
creativity required in situations involving mediation between parties regarding custody
actions.
• Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to diverse family dynamics.
• Ability to behave professionally and compassionately toward partes who are in
highly stressful situations.
• Ability to set priorities and complete job duties in a timely manner.
• Ability to prepare a variety of documents including custody agreements, proposed
orders of court, parenting plans, and recommendations.
• Ability to communicate effectively with parties, attorneys, judges, court
administration, service providers, the general public and others orally and in writing.
• Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow
instructions.
Condition of Hire
The conciliator may not practice family law before the Court of Common Pleas of Centre
County.
